Institute's Short Terms Executive Programs (STEPs) / Reach-out Programs are designed according to the needs of the plantation and associated agri-business sector. Institute has acquired rich experience in designing and conducting these programs, on "reach-out" basis. The programs are uniquely designed and have the following distinctive features:
- Serve as capacity-building initiatives and Organization Development (OD) interventions to facilitate change.
- Act as interactive and mutual learning forums.
- Provide motivational inputs in general.
- Act as diagnostic and problem solving labs; and
- Facilitate converting ideas into action.

STEP on Competitive Advantage for R&D Management: ICRI Perspective (July 6-10, 2009) : This STEP was organized for the Heads of Division and Senior Scientists of Indian Cardamom Research Institute (ICRI) of Spices Board at IIPM, Bangalore. The broad contents of the program included, Competitive Advantage for Scientist Resource Development (SRD), Role and Value in Institutionalizing Stakeholders of Spices Sector for Sustainable Technology Diffusion and Development Programmes; International Commodity Derivatives for R&D; Competency Management: R&D Program Planning and Art of Scientific Article Writing; Performance & Career Management for R&D; Critical Thinking and Creativity for Innovation; Norms for Establishing IPR Cell & Patent Procedures for Spices R&D; Interpersonal Communication for Team Development; Synergic Motivation to Lab Technicians and Workforce towards Commitment; Coping Stress to Manage Synergy in R&D Organization. The scientists visited BIOCON-Bangalore and CFTRI-Mysore, as part of the field practicum. Prof. P. Balaram, Director, IISc., delivered a thought provoking Valedictory address for the benefit of scientists, faculty, students and staff on this occasion.
